Something Old, Something New…

One of the oldest and most popular Wedding traditions is to bring ‘Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed & Something Blue’ into your Wedding day for good luck. Whilst not a necessary addition, I love the idea behind this and think you can make any Wedding tradition as fun or as sentimental as you like! Here are some ideas of ways to add these four aspects into your big day:

Something Old

The classic option would be to wear an old family heirloom - in the form of jewellery or cufflinks. This can be a special way to honour the memory of family members, or simply to symbolise bringing something from your ‘old’ life into your new.

A different option would be to hire vintage crockery for your Wedding meal. This is a great way to add more character to your Wedding tablescapes! Similarly with a classic car – this is a very popular traditional option and makes for great Wedding pictures.

Something New

You naturally accumulate a lot of new items for your Wedding – but if you want to have something specific to bring meaning to the tradition, a popular option for your ‘Something  New’ is to choose a brand new fragrance for the day itself!

Choosing a special perfume or cologne to wear for the first time when you get married means that you will forever connect the scent with your big day. This is so simple, yet one of my favourite ideas for this tradition.

If you really want to go all out, what about a brand new tattoo on your Wedding night? If it suits your vibe as a couple, this could be such a fun activity for you and your guests! Recently done at the Wedding party of Olivia Attwood & her now husband Bradley Dack, I can see this becoming a more popular Wedding trend in the next year or so!

 Something Borrowed

Borrowing a piece of jewellery or cufflinks for this can go hand in hand with your ‘Something Old’ as mentioned above. Similarly, it would be so special to borrow a veil from a friend or family member – many people keep their Wedding outfits and would be honoured to lend it to you for you special day!

If you are having a reading or poem at your ceremony, you could ask around your friends & family to see if someone has a copy of the book it originates from to use for the day. This is a lovely way to include whoever you borrow from by giving them a small part to play in the most special part of the Wedding day itself!

 Something Blue

If you don’t want to go directly on theme with blue décor or florals, you could go down the attire route for you & your Wedding party! Maybe some blue heels to complete your Wedding day attire – or another popular option is to use this colour for all of the suits/bridesmaids dresses.

You can really get away with adding a touch of blue into so many aspects of your Wedding day. Whether it’s as subtle as a small piece of jewellery or as forward as blue invitations & on-the-day stationary, the options are endless!

I hope this gives you some inspiration if you’re looking to incorporate this tradition into your Wedding day – as I said, it’s not necessary and many couples are now actually choosing to ditch the old-school trends in favour of more modern occasions in general. I’m all here for either option, or a mix of the two… The most amazing thing about Weddings for me is how personal taste can create such different yet equally beautiful events - and how the definition of a dream day differs from couple to couple!
