How to Find your Wedding Style

In my opinion, one of the most important steps to take when you begin your Wedding planning journey is to find your event style. This is a task you may not have spent much time thinking about yet, but is the best way to make your day feel personal, special and will help you to bring every component of the day together.

The whole idea may seem overwhelming – where do you start, how do you narrow down a colour scheme, how do you make the day look and feel personal to you? My job as a Planner for this task is simple – to help you to identify a Wedding style that will work for you will truly reflect who you are as a couple, whilst ensuring the day is still delivering everything you want it to. Below are a few ideas to help guide you through the process…

MOODBOARDS

My first tip is to start everything off by creating some form of mood board. Visual planning is my favourite way to get started with any kind of event! A good way doing this is through Pinterest, but if you prefer a more tangible approach you may want to scour the internet for pictures, print them out and scrapbook them. Scrolling through Instagram accounts like Rock My Wedding and Junebug Weddings is a great way to see a few different Wedding styles in one place, which can be helpful if you are completely unsure what you are looking for. Any way of bringing some of your favourite pictures, colours and ideas together is good – this will help you to decide what you both like, what you don’t like and which aspects of your inspiration pictures you want to bring into your own day.

YOUR SURROUNDINGS

It is always a good idea to take some inspiration from your own surroundings to bring into your Wedding day. Take a look around your home – is it modern and bright? Neutral with muted tones? Retro and fun? Or do you have a more eclectic space, with a mix of many different textures and colours? Whichever the answer, this is a good indication of a style or colour scheme that will reflect you both. We tend to try and make our homes portray the things that make us feel the happiest and most relaxed – so why not bring that into your Wedding day too?

YOUR PASSIONS

To make your day feel more personal, sit down with your partner and have a think about what you both love to do together. Something as simple as your few favourite songs can become table names, your favourite drink can be worked into a signature cocktail or a passion for films could become vintage, ticket themed invitations! You can create these small touches very easily when planning your event – they don’t have to be huge, extravagant ideas – and they will still bring that extra touch of magic into your day.

Equally, if you do have passions that drive you and are a big part of your life, why not base your entire day around them? If you…

Love to travel: Have a destination Wedding in a special spot that matters to you both!

Love to walk/mountain climb: Have an outdoor ceremony and spend your day exploring with your photographer to get some amazing pictures.

Love animals:  Include your pets in your ceremony & ask your guests to donate to animal shelters instead of buying you gifts!

Love a certain film/era: Go the whole hog and carry the theme through from start to finish – from invitations to the venue, the dress code, the meal and even the music at the end of the night! Your guests will love a themed occasion and it’s a great excuse for everyone to get dressed up and have some fun!

YOUR PERSONALITIES

It is important to take into consideration yours and your partners personalities when nailing down the style of event you want to hold. Some people love to host and hold big dinner parties in their everyday life – in which case you may be looking into large, more extravagant ideas such as a 3 Day Wedding (something which has grown in popularity over the last few years!). This usually consists of a pre-Wedding get together and rehearsal on Day 1, the Wedding itself with a large reception on Day 2 and then a final farewell brunch on the morning of Day 3. This takes a huge amount of planning but can be so worthwhile if guests are travelling to your location - and is an event that truly won’t be easily forgotten!

On the other side, there are couples who prefer to stay a little more low key and don’t enjoy the pressure that may come with a larger event. Couples like this can choose to scale back the whole Wedding day by hosting an intimate ceremony with an evening meal at Sunset with their nearest and dearest, before settling into their accommodation for some relaxed drinks and casual conversation at the end of the night.

Couples may need to compromise and find a middle ground between the two examples above – personalities differ from person to person and not every couple will both want exactly the same thing all the time! There really are endless possibilities when it comes to your Wedding style and how you want the day to pan out, so it is important to discuss this with your partner in the early stages to ensure you are both on the same page the whole way through the planning process.

There are no limits as to how much or how little you lean into certain ideas – you may want a fairly traditional Wedding day with the odd touch of your personal style, or you may want to completely throw out the rule book and throw a truly ‘you’ bash. Either way is great – this is your day! As long as you are both happy and excited by your visions, the rest will follow.

All Weddings are beautiful, but by tapping into your personal style and finding how to reflect you both throughout the day will make for an incredible day not to be forgotten – by you or your guests!
